Arrive Frankfurt/Eisenach |
|
Upon arrival you will be met by your tour manager and private motor coach and drive the 120 miles to the ancient town of Eisenach. Johann Sebastian Bach was born here 1685 and Luther studied here before beginning the translation of New Testament under the patronage of the Duke of Saxony. This afternoon we will have a tour of Eisenach and visit the 16th century Pfarrkirche St Georg where Luther preached 1521. Time permitting visit Luther’s House where he lived from 1498 to1501 while a student of Latin. Documents and religious books related to Luther are on view. Overnight in Eisenach. |

|
Today we will travel by private motor coach to Leipzig but first we make a stop just outside Eisenach to visit the UNESCO designated World Heritage site of Wartburg fortress. Here in exile after his defiant speech at Worms, Luther translated the Bible into German. The oldest part of the castle dates from 12th century but parts date from the 15th century - you will see the Knights Hall, Banqueting Hall, the Elizabeth Gallery with its fine frescoes, and the room where Luther lived and worked.
We continue our journey of 120 miles to Leipzig for the commencement of the BWA Youth Conference. |

At lunch time today we leave Leipzig for the drive to captivating city of Dresden.
The historical centre of the city is characterized by Baroque and Saxon architecture but much of Dresden has been beautifully restored in the original style after the centre of the city was all but obliterated in bombing during WWII. This city was always famous for the arts – having nurtured great talents such as Richard Wagner and being home to splendid art collections. We will have an orientation tour upon arrival taking in the beautifully restored Frauenkirche with its huge dome, Theatreplatz, Semper Opera House and the famous Zwinger Museum. Dinner and overnight Dresden. |

Today we leave Dresden for our journey to Berlin. En route we stop to visit the important town of Wittenberg or ‘Lutherstadt’. We have a guided tour of this interesting historic town where Martin Luther was appointed the town preacher and we visit Schlosskirche (Castle Church) where in 1517 Luther pinned up his famous 95 Articles condemning the abuses practiced by the church and where Luther’s tomb lies. We also see the statue of Luther in Market in front of the 15th century town hall and the birthplace of Lucas Cranach the Elder. Also see Stadtkirche where Luther preached. Continue to the sensational city of Berlin – full of history, vibrancy and an evocative blend of past, present, future. Dinner and overnight Berlin. |

We have a full day guided tour great city today. See the historic centre including the strategic Brandenburg Gate - the triumphal arch which is the very emblem of Berlin, built in 1789, the beautiful Berlin State Opera House, and the Reichstag - a massive Neo-Renaissance palace which inaugurated in 1894 the sessions of the new Diet of the Empire (now beautifully renovated in dramatic style by Sir Norman Foster). We will see the highlights of both the old ‘East’ and West Berlin including the grand ‘boulevard’, Kurfurstendamm, Victory Column, Charlottenburg Palace, Unter den Linden, the famous avenue 'under the lime trees' conceived in 1647, the dazzling Potsdam Square with its incredible new buildings, the famous Alexanderplatz, Karl Marx-Allee with its Stalinesque blocks, Old Berlin city hall, the Berliner Dom, remains of the famous wall with its spectacular graffiti. Today will include a visit to the emotive Check-Point Charlie Museum and a visit to the spectacular Museum Island for an interior visit of the world-famous Pergamon Museum. Dinner and overnight Berlin. |

|
On arrival you are met by your tour manager and private motor coach. First drive due south and through spectacular alpine scenery into Austria. Stop to visit Innsbruck, which has twice hosted the Winter Olympic Games. Sightseeing includes the famous Golden Roof built in 1500 which was decorated with almost 3000 gold-plated copper tiles for Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor. Afterwards continue to the quaint village of Oberammergau with its beautiful frescoed houses and where the ‘Passion Play’ is performed only every 10 years. Check into your hotel for 2 nights. |

Today is dedicated to a full day excursion to visit King Ludwig’s fairy-tale castle at Neuschwanstein returning to Oberammergau for overnight. On the way back to Oberammergau surrounded by spectacular scenery we stop to visit the beautiful Wies Church. |

This morning travel the 160 miles northwards to the enthralling city of Nuremberg. Now famous for is magical Christmas Market it was once notorious as being chosen by the Nazis for its huge annual rallies. Your guided tour will take in the old town and the 15th century fortifications which have remained mainly intact in spite of the WWII bombings. You will walk through Nuremberg’s prettiest square and see the half-timbered buildings on the way to the Albrecht Durer house which you will visit (interior). Afterwards you also see the Palace of Justice where the famous War Crimes Tribunal sat in 1946 – know as ‘the Nuremberg Trials’. Until 1949, they were followed by several other trials, the so-called Nuremberg follow-up trials, against important groups, such as for example medical doctors, legal practitioners, the SS and the police, industrialists and high-ranking government officials. Continue to hotel. |

Today you will travel to Leipzig – a journey of 170 miles. En route you will make a short detour to visit the incredible historic town of Weimar. Weimar is known as the German Athens. Over the centuries it bred an unusual flowering of intellectual talent. Luther, Cranach, Bach, Schiller, Liszt, and greatest of German classicists Johann Wolfgang von Goethe lived and worked here. A formidable cultural expansion from mid 16th century made the town the true spiritual capital of Germany. You will have a short walking tour of the centre of the town with your tour manager and visit the Stadtkirche – a triple nave Gothic church wherein you will see the Cranach Triptych. Continue to Leipzig for the commencement of the BWA Youth conference. Check into your conference hotel. |
